Is it worth painting kitchen cabinets instead of replacing them?

We do not, and it is worth being suspicious of anyone who offers to. Bonding primers exist that claim no sanding is needed, and on a clean matte surface they can grip. On a kitchen carrying fifteen years of cooking grease and silicone furniture polish, skipping the mechanical profile is the most reliable way to get a finish that peels at the handles within two years.
Do you paint oak cabinets so the grain does not show?
Yes, with a full grain fill. Oak has deep open pores that paint flows into rather than over, so without filling, a painted oak door still reads as oak in a new colour. Paste filler is worked in, cured and sanded flush before priming. It adds roughly twenty-five to forty percent to the cost and it is the single most important decision on an oak kitchen.
